A Special Place - Island of Madeira

Take vines from the Mediterranean, the rose bush from England,

palms from the African hibiscus, from the isles of the tropics and the giant hardwoods of Americas,

carpet a tiny clutch of mountains and valleys with ferns, heathers, cactus and shrubs from the four corners of the earth

Liberally sprinkle rich, volcanic soil over the plot with every imaginable fruit and tree and vegetable plant.

Float the entire cornucopia out to an anchorage in the middle of the Ocean.

Brush with warm Southerly breezes and top with a puff ball of clouds.

These are the very special ingredients that make up the recipe for the Island of Madeira.

Caressed by the warm, sparkling waters of the Gulf Stream, some 400 miles off the north west coast of Africa lies the beautiful sub-tropical island. Blessed by a climate almost perfect year round, with temperatures hovering constantly around the 20c/70F, this haven hosts attractions galore, particularly for holidaymakers seeking peace, quite and pure relaxation.

The scenery on Madeira is truly breathtaking, with masses of colourful hydrangeas , fuchsias, bourgainvillaeas,`"birds of paradise", mimosa, magnolia, orchids, palm trees, banana plantations, vineyards and valley crowned finally by mountain peaks, soaking skywards to some 6000 ft.

Funchal is a favourite port for many of the world´s luxury cruise liners, and in the maze of cobbled streets, there is an abundance of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops, with bargains to be had particularly in leather goods and shoes. It is here that you can take the cable car to the heights of Monte and visit the sub-tropical gardens and descend by wickerwork toboggan to Funchal. Visit the famous little flower and fruit markets, where mangoes, pawpaws, custard apples, sugar cane, passion fruit, and avocado can be bought. The cool marble slabs of the fish market are laden with the fruits of the sea, and there you will find the espada or black scabbard fish, alongside tuna, bonito, bream and many others. Wherever you go in Madeira, you can bask in the warm friendly welcome of the island folk.  Discover then the tantalising treasures of "Paradise Island" - dream of days filled with unforgettable memories, a holiday destination you will simply adore.
